US Travel Advisory Highlights Risks of Crime and Terrorism in Belgium

    August 6, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has updated its travel alert for Belgium, emphasizing concerns related to crime and civil unrest. As of July 23, Belgium remains at Level 2, indicating Americans should exercise increased caution. The advisory continues to include terrorism as a relevant threat. It does not advise travelers to cancel or avoid visiting the country but offers guidance on security considerations and practical precautions for visitors to Brussels and other Belgian destinations.

US travel advisory flags crime terrorism in Belgium
Updated guidance highlights crime, terrorism and unrest risks for Belgium visitors.

The advisory emphasizes that pickpockets and thefts targeting bags frequently occur in busy tourist hotspots. Additional vigilance is necessary in railway stations, airports, restaurants, buses, trams, and metro systems. Authorities also point out incidents of purse snatching, phone theft, and property theft from vehicles. It is advised that travelers secure passports, cash, and electronic gadgets while navigating crowded public spaces. The State Department recommends keeping valuables hidden and avoiding leaving bags unattended, even momentarily.

Specific risks to train travelers include luggage stored on overhead racks or near train doors. The guidance notes a rise in bag theft on routes connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves may use distraction tactics or operate in groups to steal wallets, phones, and small travel bags. Belgian Federal Police urge passengers to keep important belongings close throughout their journeys, especially during station stops, boarding procedures, and crowded transfers between trains.

Theft risks are concentrated on transportation systems

The terrorism section covers threats at public events, hotels, restaurants, shopping districts, educational institutions, and religious sites. Parks, transit networks, and other crowded venues are also included in the warning. Belgium is designated as having a national threat level of Level 3 on a four-tier scale. The country’s threat assessment authority describes this level as serious, indicating a possible and likely risk of terrorism or extremism. Visitors are advised to stay alert and heed instructions from local authorities.

Public demonstrations and strikes may also impact travel within Belgium. Large-scale protests can cause road congestion, delay train services, or disrupt urban transportation. Police may restrict access or close streets near protest locations. The advisory recommends avoiding protests and staying informed about local developments before traveling in affected areas. Travelers should verify train, bus, and metro schedules during labor strikes or major public events, with these precautions applicable in Brussels and other major cities.

Preparation and emergency protocols enhance travel safety

The State Department advises enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, which provides safety alerts and facilitates contact with the U.S. Embassy in Brussels during emergencies. It is recommended to review entry regulations, local laws, and health advisories before departure. Travelers should also keep copies of passports and essential documents and share their itinerary with trusted contacts to aid response efforts after an incident.

In Belgium, the emergency number 112 connects callers to police, fire, and medical services. Travelers can dial 101 for local police assistance. Caution is advised near banks, ticket machines, and ATMs, as thieves often target distracted visitors. It is important to stay updated with official notices and keep emergency contacts readily accessible. The latest update continues to list crime, terrorism, and unrest as the primary concerns under the Level 2 advisory status.
