Pacific Region Benefits from Over $150 Million U.S. Support Package

    September 3, 2026

KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – During a regional gathering in Palau, the United States declared an allocation exceeding $150 million to assist Pacific Island nations. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau presented this funding on September 1 at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue. The aid encompasses sectors such as energy security, transportation, digital infrastructure, maritime enforcement, and public services. The State Department emphasized that this package consolidates multiple programs targeting Pacific Island countries.

US launches Pacific support package exceeding $150 million
Pacific Island energy, digital and maritime projects form part of new US support.

A significant portion of the announcement, the $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative, is among the largest components. The State Department stated that it plans to allocate the funds while coordinating with Congress. This initiative aims to back projects related to fuel storage and initiatives that enhance the reliability of electricity grids. Additionally, U.S. officials outlined further infrastructure investments designed to facilitate better access to vital services. Several aspects of these projects await congressional approval before disbursal of funds.

Support for Tonga includes a study of its fuel transport and storage capabilities. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency approved a $1.42 million grant to conduct this feasibility assessment. The study will analyze port facilities, pipelines, storage facilities, and Tonga’s fuel pricing system. Plans involve assessing an increase in national fuel reserves from approximately 15 to 20 days of supply, aiming for about 60 days. This initiative is part of the broader regional energy support package.

Focus on Storage and Infrastructure in Energy Projects

The aid package also includes a planned contribution of $50 million from the U.S. toward upgrading the port on Penrhyn in the Cook Islands. New Zealand intends to contribute NZ$17.5 million and will lead the project’s execution alongside the Cook Islands and the United States. The upgrade aims to enhance port safety, cargo handling, and transportation access on the remote atoll, while also facilitating connections to local services. This funding was announced during the same regional discussions held in Palau.

Projects related to digital infrastructure and transport extend support to Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will fund a study to upgrade Tonga’s national data center and network. Assistance for the Marshall Islands will target its mobile network, key ports, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will also benefit from a feasibility study concerning the relocation of Belau National Hospital. These initiatives collectively expand the package to include communication, aviation, and public infrastructure projects.

Expansion of Maritime Security and Technological Initiatives

An additional $17 million from the United States is allocated for programs combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, pending congressional approval. This effort will include legal reforms, compliance training, and monitoring technology. Washington and Palau will jointly lead a new conference involving Pacific police ministers, with a focus on maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit finance. U.S. representatives highlighted these law enforcement initiatives as part of the broader commitments made to Pacific Island nations.

Further projects involve advancements in cloud computing, seabed mapping, and potable water services. The U.S. plans to bolster cloud support for Pacific governments and assist with marine mapping and characterization efforts. Environmental agencies also intend to initiate a drinking water sampling project in Palau, which includes training for local operators and laboratory personnel. Overall, the package exceeds $150 million, covering planned funding, grants, and technical aid. While some projects are already backed by agencies, others remain contingent upon congressional approval.
