Michigan cyclospora cases reach 11,234 with two deaths

    August 4, 2026

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan has reported two deaths linked to its 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first fatalities recorded in the state investigation. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services listed 11,234 cases as of Aug. 3. Officials also reported 193 hospitalizations through July 30. Both patients had serious underlying medical conditions. Health authorities said cyclosporiasis and dehydration may have affected those conditions, but they released no further personal details.

A multistate iceberg lettuce recall remains part of the cyclospora investigation.

The patients became sick before companies announced a voluntary iceberg lettuce recall on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added the deaths to its national outbreak information on Aug. 3. Federal officials classified both as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving patients with underlying health problems. Michigan’s numbers include all illnesses reported during the state inquiry. The federal tally generally covers confirmed cases, which can create differences between state and national figures.

A separate federal investigation has connected a large share of cases to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, officials had identified 1,947 infections across nine states. Those patients also reported exposure to Taco Bell restaurants. At least 98 people required hospital treatment. Illnesses began between June 22 and July 20. The detailed federal report did not initially include Michigan’s two deaths because the state confirmed them after that update.

Iceberg lettuce recall spans multiple states

Taylor Farms de Mexico removed iceberg lettuce from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The recall covered food-service products and selected Marketside lettuce sold at Walmart locations. Retail items included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce with use-by dates from July 18 through Aug. 3. Taylor Fresh Foods sent affected food-service lettuce to 27 states from June 29 through July 16. Taco Bell stopped using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

Michigan investigators have not linked every state case to the recalled iceberg lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to examine lettuce and salad greens as possible sources. Officials have not identified one product, farm or supplier behind the full Michigan outbreak. They also have not connected either death to a specific recalled item. Federal officials say the known lettuce cluster accounts for only part of the cyclosporiasis activity under investigation nationwide.

Cyclospora infection often causes lasting symptoms

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes the intestinal illness cyclosporiasis. People can contract the parasite after consuming contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, appetite loss, bloating and weight loss. Symptoms often begin about one week after exposure, although the timing varies. Without treatment, the illness can continue for more than a month. Some patients improve briefly before symptoms return.

Health officials urge consumers to discard recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the store. People should also clean containers, shelves and surfaces that touched the product. Anyone with symptoms should contact a health care provider, especially after eating iceberg lettuce in recent weeks. Older adults and people with underlying conditions may face greater risks from severe dehydration. Michigan continues to update its outbreak totals as state and local health teams review additional illness reports.
