Eight Lives Lost in Erie Home Shooting as Gunman Ends His Own Life

    October 12, 2026

ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – A tragic shooting at a residence in Erie, Pennsylvania, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, with the gunman reportedly taking his own life, according to police. The total number of fatalities reached nine. Among the victims were a pregnant woman, a 5-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl. Police Chief Rick Lorah stated that seven of the eight victims were related to the 45-year-old shooter, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman.

Erie home shooting kills eight victims and gunman
Police investigate the Erie, Pennsylvania shooting that left nine people dead.

The assault reportedly started just before 5 p.m. on October 9 at a home on Perry Street. Authorities reviewed video and audio recordings that captured muffled gunfire from inside the house. Two distressed women arrived and knocked forcefully on the door. Police said that the shooter exited the residence and fired at both women as they approached him before retreating back inside. Officers responded within minutes after a ShotSpotter alert detected gunfire in the area.

When officers arrived, they discovered the two women dead outside the home. Prior to entering, police deployed a drone and a robot into the house. Inside, they found two young children on the first floor, and in a stairwell, officers located two women and two young men. The gunman was found on the second floor with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that all nine deaths occurred prior to police arrival at the scene.

Investigators pursue answers following Erie mass shooting

No clear motive has been identified for the Erie mass shooting. Lorah mentioned that detectives intend to interview relatives and examine phones belonging to the women killed outside. The police have not publicly identified the shooter or the victims. Efforts continue to reconstruct the events leading up to the first gunfire. Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz urged the public to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information while the investigation remains ongoing.

Additionally, police addressed reports indicating sounds of more gunfire after officers arrived at the residence. Lorah explained those noises originated from flashbang devices used by SWAT team members during the response. He confirmed no further shots were fired after police arrived, clarifying that the killings had concluded before officers entered the property. The Erie Police Department continues to analyze evidence from the scene and nearby areas to verify the timeline of events.

Pennsylvania authorities respond as community mourns losses

Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania stated that he spoke with Erie Mayor Daria Devlin following the incident and offered state support. During a Saturday press conference, Devlin expressed her condolences to the victims’ families and thanked first responders for their efforts at the scene. Officials indicated that investigators are still gathering evidence and have not disclosed a motive. Erie, located in northwestern Pennsylvania near Lake Erie, is approximately 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Later, community members placed flowers, candles, and stuffed animals outside the Perry Street residence as a sign of mourning. Relatives, friends, and other residents gathered around the property while the city remembered those lost. Authorities confirmed that eight victims died in the attack, and the shooter also died. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. Detectives persist in examining evidence to build a comprehensive account of the events that led to the fatalities.
