US Jobs Data Diminished Rate Hike Expectations, Boosting Gold Prices

    October 5, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Gold prices rose on Monday as investors considered weak U.S. employment figures against a stronger dollar. Spot gold increased 0.6% to $4,165.49 an ounce by 0901 GMT. U.S. gold futures for December delivery climbed 0.8% to $4,194.60. This move extended an earlier rally seen in Asian markets. Despite recent volatility across metals, currencies, and government bonds, bullion remained above $4,100. The latest gains kept gold near historically high levels at the start of the new trading week.

Gold climbs as US jobs slowdown reshapes rate expectations
Weak US payroll growth supports gold as the dollar limits gains in precious metals.

The focus of the market was largely influenced by September employment data. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. nonfarm payrolls grew by 29,000, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.2%. The data indicated a slowdown in hiring after months of elevated borrowing costs. Since gold does not pay interest, it often reacts to shifts in rate expectations. When prospects for higher interest rates diminish, the yield advantage of bonds and other interest-bearing assets narrows, which was a key factor in Monday’s trading of precious metals.

In September, the Federal Reserve increased its benchmark rate by 25 basis points, setting the target range at 3.75% to 4.00%. This marked the first U.S. rate hike in three years. Following the jobs report, expectations for an additional rate increase in October dropped sharply. The Fed continues to evaluate labor market conditions, inflation, and broader economic indicators while striving for its 2% inflation goal. Meanwhile, investors kept an eye on Treasury yields to gauge borrowing costs and the prospects for interest-free assets, influencing market sentiment.

    Dollar’s Strength Limits Gold’s Rise

The U.S. dollar index increased by 0.22% during Monday’s trading session. The currency’s strength capped some of gold’s gains, as bullion is typically priced in dollars on the global market. When the dollar appreciates, buyers using other currencies face higher costs. Additionally, Treasury yields remained elevated following recent selling in government debt, creating competing influences for gold. While softer employment data supported prices, dollar strength restricted further gains. Currency and bond markets played a significant role in driving prices during the European morning.

Last month, U.S. government debt surpassed $40 trillion, adding a notable figure to the overall financial landscape. Despite high bond yields, gold continues trading above $4,000. Central banks also hold substantial gold reserves as part of their official assets. The metal’s continued performance keeps focus on its role as a reserve asset alongside major currencies and sovereign debt. On Monday, gold prices stayed steady as markets balanced fiscal conditions, borrowing costs, employment data, and currency fluctuations.

Wider Metals Rise Led by Silver and Platinum

Other precious metals also gained ground. Spot silver increased by 2.2% to $61.7252 an ounce, while platinum rose 2.1% to $1,733.50. Palladium climbed 1.3% to $1,182.50. These gains kept the broader metals market in positive territory alongside gold. Traders continued monitoring interest rates, currency trends, and global risk factors following a volatile period across commodities and fixed-income markets. Among the four major precious metals, silver posted the strongest percentage increase during Monday’s session.

Oil prices declined on Monday as additional supplies entered the market. Increased exports from the Middle East and releases from stockpiles boosted crude inventories. This reduction eased some near-term inflation pressures from energy markets. During European trading hours, gold maintained its gains. Investors remained focused on the weaker U.S. job growth, a stronger dollar, and the current interest rate environment in the U.S. These factors together defined the early-week outlook for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
