Containment of Hawk Fire Reaches 85%, with 47 Homes Confirmed Destroyed

    August 26, 2026

RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – By late Tuesday, firefighters had increased containment of the Hawk Fire near Reno to 85%, having already claimed the destruction of 47 homes and one commercial property. Spreading swiftly through arid terrain northwest of the city, the wildfire expanded to 15,067 acres. During the event, eight additional homes suffered severe damage. Seven individuals, including firefighters, sustained injuries, though authorities reported no fatalities. This update on property damage follows a comprehensive assessment of neighborhoods impacted since the fire’s onset on Saturday.

Washoe County teams examined the affected areas and documented the latest losses in communities surrounding the fire zone. Most destruction occurred west of U.S. Highway 395, where the fire moved through populated regions early on. Search teams checked affected properties and found no evidence of additional victims. Officials stated the fire traveled roughly six miles during its first 24 hours. The rapid spread prompted evacuation orders across neighborhoods north and northwest of Reno.

On Tuesday, approximately 9,300 residents east of U.S. 395 were permitted to return home as firefighting conditions improved. Around 5,000 individuals remained under evacuation orders during an afternoon briefing. Authorities eased restrictions in several areas as crews secured more of the fire perimeter. Some roads reopened after closures disrupted travel around northern Reno. Returning residents faced damaged utilities, burned properties, and areas still under firefighter patrols and safety checks.

Containment Advances as Local Residents Reintegrate

While maintaining the fire’s size at 15,067 acres, firefighters increased containment around its edges. Officials announced that late Tuesday, 586 personnel were assigned to the incident, a reduction from earlier, larger deployments. Crews continued searching for hot spots and reinforcing containment lines around affected neighborhoods. The operation involved engines, aircraft, and firefighting teams from multiple U.S. states, along with personnel from Australia and New Zealand, working across northern Nevada’s fire zone.

The Hawk Fire has been identified as human-caused, although authorities have not specified whether the ignition was accidental or intentional. The fire started Saturday near the Somersett area and rapidly spread through dry vegetation. Strong winds initially propelled flames toward communities in northwest Reno. As conditions improved, firefighters gained more control and expanded containment lines. No further details about the fire’s precise origin have been released by officials.

Ongoing Emergency Efforts in the Fire-Affected Areas

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County over the weekend amid expanding evacuation zones. The declaration mobilized state resources to support local firefighting, public safety, and recovery initiatives. Emergency officials coordinated efforts to assist residents who evacuated and crews working in damaged communities. The emergency declaration is set to remain in effect through August 29 unless ended earlier by authorities. Both state and local agencies continued managing evacuation updates and access to affected neighborhoods.

The fire also caused damage to power infrastructure, including approximately 100 wooden utility poles along its path. Utility crews worked to restore electricity as more residents returned to areas that had reopened. Firefighters remained on patrol on Tuesday, inspecting damaged properties and monitoring conditions near containment lines. Authorities also continued adjusting evacuation zones as access improved. The confirmed toll remains at 47 homes destroyed, eight homes seriously damaged, and one commercial building lost, with containment steady at 85%.
