Grand Teton euthanizes bear after persistent visitor interactions raise safety concerns

    September 18, 2026

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – A black bear near Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park was put down by wildlife officials following multiple encounters with visitors. Authorities explained that the animal had accessed human food and was increasingly approaching individuals at close distances. It also became more difficult for staff to deter the bear as these interactions continued, leading managers to conclude that the situation posed a safety hazard. As a result, the bear was tranquilized in the backcountry and euthanized on Sept. 11.

Grand Teton removes bear after repeated visitor approaches
Bear safety remains a priority at Grand Teton after a food-conditioned black bear was removed.

Earlier in 2026, park personnel received reports of a black bear approaching visitors near the popular Delta Lake area. Initially, officials lacked sufficient evidence to confirm that the bear had become conditioned to human food. This assessment changed once the bear received multiple food rewards and continued to move toward people. Wildlife teams tracked its behavior and attempted hazing techniques to discourage the animal from approaching areas frequented by hikers.

Images taken after the incident depicted visitors standing mere feet from the bear, while other photos showed the animal inspecting food, backpacks, and unattended belongings left among rocks and trees. Authorities reminded visitors to immediately secure their food and gear if a bear enters the vicinity and warned against allowing bears to access human food under any circumstances. The carcass was airlifted out of the remote site the following morning by wildlife crews.

Feeding bears can alter their natural behavior

The National Park Service emphasizes that bears can quickly associate humans with easy access to food, which can lead to increased encounters along trails, near campsites, and other popular recreation spots. In this situation, managers cited repeated food rewards, close approaches, and difficulty in hazing as reasons for their decision. Officials stated that these factors indicated the animal posed a significant safety risk. The available management options were carefully considered before opting for lethal removal.

While relocating bears is sometimes part of management strategies, officials warn that it does not always resolve food-conditioned behaviors. Bears may return to familiar areas or encounter conflicts with other wildlife after a move. Proper habitat, abundant natural food sources, and limited human activity are also critical factors. For the Delta Lake bear, staff determined that all other practical options had been exhausted. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort when a bear continues to threaten human safety.

Visitors are reminded to adhere to bear safety protocols

Grand Teton National Park continues to advise that black bears and grizzly bears remain active throughout the park. Visitors are required to stay at least 100 yards away from bears and should refrain from approaching them for photographs. Backcountry travelers are encouraged to move in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray in easily accessible locations. Securing food and scented items when not in use is also essential. These measures are designed to prevent bears from gaining food rewards and becoming accustomed to human presence.

The National Park Service reports that roughly one or two bears are removed annually in the park after other management methods have failed. Most of these animals are black bears, according to park guidance. Lethal removal is only employed when a bear clearly endangers human safety and other strategies have proven ineffective. The incident at Delta Lake highlights the importance of proper food storage and maintaining safe distances to mitigate conflicts. Park officials continue to ask visitors to report bear encounters and to follow established wildlife regulations.
