U.S. National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion, Signaling Growing Fiscal Challenges

    August 31, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – The total U.S. gross national debt has now exceeded the $40 trillion mark, reaching a record level for federal borrowing. U.S. Treasury data indicated the figure hit $40.047 trillion on Aug. 18. By Aug. 27, the debt had increased further to approximately $40.078 trillion. Of this, around $32.314 trillion was debt held by the public, with roughly $7.764 trillion in government accounts.

U.S. debt crosses $40 trillion amid mounting fiscal costs
Federal debt passes $40 trillion while U.S. budget deficits remain elevated.

This milestone was achieved less than five months after the federal debt crossed the $39 trillion threshold in March. In August 2016, the gross national debt was close to $19.5 trillion, roughly half of current levels. The government accumulates debt when annual spending surpasses revenue, mainly financing the shortfalls through issuing Treasury bills, notes, and bonds to investors and government accounts.

Ongoing pressure on federal finances stems from significant yearly budget gaps. The Congressional Budget Office reported a deficit of $1.8 trillion for the first 10 months of fiscal 2026. This figure was $169 billion higher than the same period in fiscal 2025. While revenue increased by $139 billion, or 3%, federal spending rose by $308 billion, or 5%. The agency predicts that the full-year deficit will reach approximately $2.1 trillion.

Interest payments by the federal government surpass $1 trillion

Interest costs now constitute a larger portion of the federal budget. Net interest expenses are forecasted to surpass $1 trillion in fiscal 2026, rising from about $970 billion in 2025. This amount represents roughly 3.3% of the U.S. gross domestic product. Current estimates project annual net interest costs reaching $2.1 trillion by 2036, at which point these payments would constitute approximately 4.6% of GDP.

The amount of debt held by the public has also increased relative to the size of the U.S. economy. Projections place this ratio at around 101% of GDP in 2026, with expectations to reach 120% by 2036. The highest historical peak was 106% in 1946, following World War II. Under the same baseline, publicly held debt is anticipated to approach $56 trillion by 2036, while gross federal debt nears $64 trillion.

The mounting debt burden influences borrowing costs and investment

The extensive federal borrowing also impacts overall economic financial conditions. The Congressional Budget Office has found that increased government borrowing can lead to higher interest rates and a reduction in private investment over time. This, in turn, leaves businesses with less capital for expansion and productivity improvements. Such effects can also influence worker wages and household income. Consumer credit rates, including mortgages and auto loans, are affected by many factors, including broader interest rate trends.

While gross national debt and the federal deficit are related measures, they reflect different parts of the government’s fiscal health. The debt shows accumulated federal obligations, whereas the deficit tracks the yearly gap between spending and revenue. Both remain high in fiscal 2026, with gross debt surpassing $40 trillion and the annual deficit estimated at $2.1 trillion. The deficit makes up about 5.8% of GDP, compared to a 50-year average of approximately 3.8%.
