Nearly Two Weeks Without Power Leaves Indiana City in Crisis

    August 25, 2026

GARY, Indiana / RankWire.AI / — A powerful weather event struck Northwest Indiana, causing widespread infrastructure damage and leaving thousands of residents in Lake County without electricity. The outage, which has persisted for nearly two weeks, resulted from an August 11 derecho that swept through the area with peak wind gusts of 99 miles per hour, toppling hundreds of power poles and cutting off distribution lines. Community advocates and municipal officials have criticized the slow pace of recovery, describing the situation as an unacceptable scenario for a US city still without power after such an extended period, amid growing frustration among affected families.

Utility line technicians perform emergency electrical repairs along damaged suburban roadways.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO), the regional utility provider, reported that this storm caused the most extensive and complex damage in its history of operations, initially cutting off power to over 300,000 customers. Although most affected areas have seen power restored, Gary remains the most impacted community, with nearly 20,000 customers still without electricity late into the second week of recovery efforts. Representatives from the company explained that restoring damaged circuits involved replacing roughly 300 distribution poles and 44 high-voltage transmission structures within the city alone.

The prolonged blackout has sparked public outrage as residents face the loss of air conditioning, refrigeration, and functioning traffic lights during the intense summer heat. Emergency distribution points have provided ice, bottled water, and non-perishable meals to families struggling with spoiled food and limited medical supplies. Indiana Governor Mike Braun has deployed the Indiana National Guard to support disaster relief efforts, while the federal government has authorized emergency aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Repair Operations Continue as Thousands Remain Without Basic Electricity

The financial strain on local residents has increased, with many spending hundreds of dollars on fuel for portable generators and traveling out of state to buy ice and batteries. Small retail businesses and grocery stores in Gary have faced severe disruptions, with many forced to close temporarily. Nonetheless, major industrial plants such as U.S. Steel at Gary Works have maintained their main manufacturing activities through localized power grid setups.

Leaders from civil rights organizations and local elected officials have raised concerns about disparities in the pace of infrastructure recovery within lower-income communities. NiSource Inc., the parent company of NIPSCO, dismissed claims of unequal resource distribution, asserting that repair priorities were strictly determined by the extent of physical damage. Utility officials also confirmed that hundreds of mutual assistance linemen from neighboring states have been deployed to speed up the rebuilding process of the power grid.

Relief Efforts and Cooling Centers Coordinated by Emergency Services

As crews work toward complete restoration, state utility regulators announced that investigations will examine tree-trimming practices and system maintenance policies. Meteorologists explained that the widespread straight-line winds, combined with rain-saturated soil, uprooted mature trees, causing cascading failures along overhead power lines. This event has rekindled national debates over modernizing the power grid and the need to bury distribution lines in areas prone to severe weather.

The disaster has exposed ongoing vulnerabilities in municipal power distribution systems during major weather events. The situation remains unacceptable for a US city that has been without power for nearly two weeks, with local leaders demanding long-term investments to prevent similar multi-week failures during future storms. Over the coming months, state regulatory bodies are expected to review the utility’s emergency management strategies and infrastructure resilience standards.
