Spokane fires burn 8,000 acres and displace 67,000 people

    August 4, 2026

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Three fast-moving wildfires near Spokane have destroyed at least 700 structures and displaced tens of thousands of residents. The Old Trails, Autumn Lane and Fairview fires have burned more than 8,000 acres across Spokane County since Aug. 1. Emergency officials placed about 67,000 people under evacuation orders as flames reached neighborhoods north and northwest of the city. More than 1,000 firefighters worked across the area. Officials reported no deaths or major injuries through Aug. 3.

Spokane fires burn 8,000 acres and displace 67,000 people
Thousands leave Spokane communities as three wildfires spread across the county.

Strong winds drove the eastern Washington fires through dry grass, timber and residential streets during the first hours. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River and entered northwest Spokane soon after it started. Flames damaged houses, businesses, vehicles, electrical equipment and other property across several communities. Smoke spread over the metropolitan area and reduced visibility near active fire zones. Infrared surveys showed possible damage to hundreds of additional structures, but assessment teams had not confirmed those losses.

Deputies arrested 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson linked to the Old Trails Fire. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said investigators connected the arrest only to that blaze. The fire began near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. The allegation remains before the courts and does not establish guilt. Investigators did not link the arrest to the Autumn Lane or Fairview fires. Authorities reported no other arrests and continued separate investigations into both fires.

    Evacuations spread across Spokane County

Evacuation orders covered broad sections of northern and northwestern Spokane, along with nearby parts of Spokane County. Emergency teams directed residents toward shelters and kept roads closed around the three fire areas. Staff moved patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center as the threat expanded. The city opened the Spokane Convention Center for residents and pets who fled the fires. Community organizations supplied meals, water, child care and other basic services. Road closures restricted access to several neighborhoods near the fire lines.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and activated National Guard support during the widening wildfire response. The declaration helped state and local agencies coordinate crews, equipment and emergency services across affected counties. Officials maintained a statewide burn ban amid severe heat and dry conditions. Washington also requested federal assistance as crews managed several large fires across the region. The state mobilized personnel from several agencies to support local departments. Outside firefighting teams also joined the response.

    Fire crews protect critical infrastructure

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources joined local and federal crews working on the Spokane Complex. Aircraft dropped retardant while ground teams used engines, hand tools and heavy equipment to build control lines. Firefighters defended homes, roads, hospitals, water facilities and transmission systems near the burn areas. Managers reported no containment on the three main fires through Aug. 3. Authorities maintained closures at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks. Crews worked through smoke and difficult terrain as aircraft supported suppression efforts.

The fires damaged electrical systems and cut power to thousands of customers during the first days of the emergency. Utility crews restored service where conditions allowed safe access, while emergency teams kept hazardous areas closed. Officials urged residents to follow evacuation alerts, avoid blocked roads and keep drones away from firefighting aircraft. Emergency maps and public alerts changed as crews documented shifting fire boundaries. Damage teams continued checking burned neighborhoods and verifying losses structure by structure. The confirmed total remained at least 700 structures as inspectors continued their work.
